About

My first AFL Grand Final was 1972. Carlton v Richmond. 112,393 people roaring. I was there. I've been there for 30 Grand Finals in a row since — through eligibility criteria shifts, family logistics, work complications. My dad hasn't missed one since 1949. My brother and sister since 1972. No matter who's playing, it's our family pilgrimage.

"When a hundred thousand voices come crashing into you" — that line from "Cheerin' at the G" is literal. I've lived it.

10 years ago I moved to a balcony literally 400m from the very centre of Suncorp Stadium itself. A venue that hosts rugby league, rugby union, soccer, and more — multiple codes, different scale (52,000, not 112,000), but still that same essential roar. And for decades, I felt the same absence. Crowds screaming, passion at full volume, and no song. No anthem. Nothing to sing back.

Poet for 30 years. Never thought songwriting was mine to do. But the vacuum was too obvious. Australia's sports-mad culture had everything except what it needed: music to roar along to.

So I wrote it. The anthems. The treasures hidden inside the lyrics. The national teams woven into five-word lines. The gap I'd felt since 1972, finally filled.

Then I kept writing. More songs to sing with a high baritone, catchy hooks and choruses wrapped around poetic verses — that seems to be my thing. And not just anthems: rock ballads, alt-country, and pop songs built around a melody you can't shake. A versatile songwriter, is how I'd put it — the anthems are where it started, not where it stops. Hence the albums in production: no less than four of them, with more steadily being filled. Living on the Rim featuring the anthems and additional Australian themed tracks. Cowboys n Rockets. Friends & Lovers. Club Noir.
